Instron Corporationife loading conditions on engineering materials and components involve impact or high levels of loading and strain rates. Typical examples include vehicle crash conditions, forming of metals and load conditions experienced by safety equipment.

Instron VHS Servohydraulic machines provide a solution to the test requirements associated with these materials and components, providing the capability of performing tests at different levels of strain rate and energy conditions. VHS systems are also able to be configured to perform tests from quasi-static to impact speeds as well as providing a cyclic testing capability.

A number of standard sized machines are available in the VHS family. In addition, systems may be sized to suit specific customers test requirements. Each of these systems feature the following common elements.

Specially designed high speed actuator package featuring hydrostatic bearings and seal-less piston rod, together with hydraulic cushions.
High performance control valves combined with unique control.
Interlocked protective enclosure to ensure safety of operators.
Integrated test control and
data acquisition software.
A range of fixtures for performing tensile, compressive, bend, charpy and Izod tests.
A range of instrumentation options for the measurement of load and extension with the necessary high bandwidth (up to 125kHz.).

A fully integrated solution
High rate tests are performed using Instron's VHS software program operating under FastTrack console. These provide a single user interface for test set-up, firing, data collection and viewing.

The VHS software communicates directly with the piezo-electric load cell charge amplifier conditioner and an integral National Instruments 5MHz synchronous four channel data acquisition card, which is provided in the PC as part of the system.

Safe progression from test set-up through to the firing and completion of a test is ensured through appropriate hardware interlocks, with clear reporting of test status messages on the screen.
