PowerINSPECT Software Upgrade Brings Greater Versatility

The latest release of PowerINSPECT inspection software from Delcam (Birmingham, UK) contains several key enhancements designed to boost the tool's versatility.
The software lets you compare tooling, prototype parts, or production samples with original CAD data and points out discrepancies. Models can be viewed as wireframes and users can display measured points so flaws can be seen at-a-glance; they also can be dynamically rotated for better visualization. In addition to the six standard and two isometric views, a user-definable view is available. Applications include inspecting prototypes, batch parts, molds, tools, patterns, electrodes, and master models.
The upgrades include:
new techniques to inspect geometric features, in addition to the existing method for complex surface measurement
the ability to accept point cloud data from scanning machines as well as point data from CMMs and measuring arms
new protocols that allow the software to be used with a wider variety of equipment

Better Reporting
Inspection reports can be produced automatically (either in recognized international standards or customer-specified format) including pictorial, graphical, and tabulated data. By giving real-time results in an easy to understand format, the software can identify problems earlier and they can be corrected at lower cost.
Point Cloud Data
The ability to work with point cloud data will extend the range of equipment that can provide data for PowerINSPECT. The software can analyze point clouds with tens of thousands of points in seconds, which means it can work with large data sets. To aid in interpretation, the software can highlight just the points that are out of tolerance.
Expanded Hardware Compatibility
This release contains protocols added to link to a wider range of CMMs. Equipment that can be used with the software now includes all major CMM suppliers as well as articulated measuring arms, such as those manufactured by Romer and Faro. The range of CAD data that can be used by PowerINSPECT has also been extended. In fact, files can be taken directly from CATIA, CADDS, Pro/Engineer, and Unisurf, as well as in IGES and VDA formats.
A number of changes to the user interface have improved ease of use. And the addition of OLE automation capabilities means that users can develop Visual Basic programs to automate routine operations or to provide links to other software.
