Developed as a universal measuring instrument for shopfloor applications, the Steinheil Kontur optical contour measurement system provides a method for measuring round components
Hommel America Inc.s a universal measuring instrument for shopfloor applications, the Steinheil Kontur optical contour measurement system provides a method for measuring round components. It measures linear dimensions as well as shape and position, and serves as a profile image projector.

Because the system performs multiple functions, it can replace a variety of individual measuring instruments. Among the features are automatic conversion for revised parts, automatic machine tool correction, and SPC documentation of machine capability.

The system is based on measuring principles in which the component profile is automatically scanned using an opto-electronic linear CCD array. The system's high resolution allows it to make a precise measurement in one scan. In addition, both roundness and concentricity measurement is checked by 1,440 measurements per rotation. The system also automatically optimizes combinations of all measuring functions to provide the best performance.

Measurement functions include:

  • diameter
  • length
  • reference rotational position
  • angular displacement
  • taper (diameter/length/angle)
  • groove (diameter/length/angle)
  • radius
  • threads
  • runout
  • roundness
  • chamfers
