New FARO Laser Tracker: Tougher with Exclusive Features

Lake Mary, Fla. - December 2003 - FARO Technologies, Inc., fortified its position as the market-share leader in the portable coordinate measurement machine (CMM) field with its release of the FARO Laser Tracker SI.2.

In addition to offering all the benefits of the previous FARO Tracker - which include 230-ft. range, .001-in. accuracy and a SuperADM feature that increased efficiency and reduced measurement times - the SI.2 has three advanced performance features that all other tracker systems lack:

Smart Warm-Up: runs automatically when the Tracker is switched on, and heats it to a stable temperature in half the time of the previous model.

Self Comp*: Eliminates the previously time-consuming and user-intensive compensation process. Pressing one button is all that is required to have the FARO Tracker SI.2 perform a fully automated compensation routine in only five minutes, quickly ensuring high accuracy.

Active Thermal Compensation*: Reduces fluctuations in measurement accuracies - commonly referred to as "measurement drift" - by actively responding to changes in the Tracker's temperature.

"The FARO Laser Tracker can complete virtually any large-scale measurement job with greater speed and accuracy," said FARO President and CEO Simon Raab. "With the exclusive technology in the SI.2, the FARO Tracker is even more battle-ready for a facility's toughest conditions."

To use the system, an operator places the Tracker base on a tripod, and measurements are taken as the target reflector is touched or dragged along the surface to be measured. The Laser Tracker projects a beam that the reflector bounces back to the base unit. Using the angle and the distance to the target, software within the Tracker calculates and records the position of each point within its 230-ft. range. If the beam between the Tracker and target is interrupted, its SuperADM (Absolute Distance Measurement) feature allows it to reacquire the beam without returning to a reference point.

The SI.2 will remain labeled "SI".
