Mitutoyo's Digital Caliper Resists Extreme Shop Environments
With an environmental rating of IP-65, which indicates immunity to jets of coolants and liquids from any direction, Mitutoyo America Corp.'s (Aurora, IL) new line of absolute coolant-proof calipers are designed to operate in harsh shop conditions.
Part of the company's line of environment-resistant measuring tools, these electronic calipers are completely sealed against dust and grit, preventing any foreign particles from entering the housing. The IP (International Protection) rating system is a function of the International Electrotechnical Commission that standardizes the classes of environmental protection for industrial equipment.

The value of the new caliper line lies in its ability to work in rough machine shop environments where dirt, grit, oil, and heavy coolant spray pose hazards to ordinary electronic gages. However, the coolant-proof capability also translates into benefits for field applications where weather and natural moisture may be factors.
Other features of these gages include Mitutoyo's patented Absolute Encoder Technology, which allows the instruments to retain their Origin Point and other settings even after power has been turned off. This feature saves setup time because the gage doesn't have to be reset after each use; it also increases operator confidence.
An automatic power on/off function also helps to conserve battery life. Measurements are shown on a high-contrast LCD with 7.5 mm high digits and can be switched between inch and metric mode with the touch of a button. The measuring range is 06 in. (0150 mm) with resolution of 0.0005 in. (0.01 mm) and accuracy of ±0.001 in. (±0.02 mm). The calipers are immune to overspeed error and have a long battery life of 1½ years under normal use.
