Metronor's Solo CMM: A Cost-effective Way to Measure Large Objects
New at Westec is the Solo portable CMM from Metronor Group Combining large volume capability and ease of use, the machine breaks the barrier of high-cost CMMs with pricing under $100,000. In fact, a complete turnkey system comes in at less than $70,000.
Designed to handle volumes up to 45 ft, the machine exhibits a 2-sigma sphere test, has accuracy of less than 0.002 in., and a 3D length accuracy (bias) of 0.004 in.
The CMM is able to work with large volumes because of its electro-optical working principle. What happens is this: A single high-resolution charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor (or camera) works with the company's patented smart-LED Light Pen to make direct feature measurements throughout the camera's field of view – just like a traditional CMM. The machine provides easy reach and access in small and large volumes, has no moving mechanical parts, and offers superior long-term stability and reliability.

Another feature that makes the CMM particularly useful is the company's CAD software module, which allows the machine to compare actual product to the most recent CAD version in real time; it also provides graphical results to operators and engineers. The CMM sets up easily and can be moved to different locations.
While the company has marketed its high-end, dual-sensor system primarily to automotive and aerospace OEMs and tier one companies, the new Solo CMM has appeal to a much broader market. "Bringing Solo to market is a challenge for us, as the Solo seems to appeal to companies far outside what has traditionally been our core markets. We are therefore marketing the Solo through a steadily growing network of local sales representatives, but will make very sure the market-leading Metronor support experience becomes part of the Solo package as well," explained Harald Suphellen, president.
