A variety of handheld eddy current probes can be used for inspection of aircraft airframe and engines
Zetec Inc.f handheld eddy current probes can be used for inspection of aircraft airframe and engines, welds, material sorting, conductivity testing, and other applications.

Manufactured in differential, absolute, and driver pickup (also called reflection or send-receive) configurations, most probes come in both shielded and unshielded designs. The shielded version focuses the magnetic field generated by the coil, which makes the probe more sensitive to flaws and decreasing the size of the edge-effect zone.

For high sensitivity and resolution, pencil probes are used for detecting surface and near-surface flaws in areas around fastener and rivet heads as well as in hard-to-reach areas, curved areas, and on irregular surfaces. Spot probes are used for flat surface applications, and many are spring-loaded to keep liftoff to a minimum. They are also used for surface and subsurface flaw detection, checking the conductivity of material, material sorting, and nonconductive coating thickness measurement. Probe bodies are made of durable, wear-resistant material and the coils are protected by aluminum oxide wear disks.

Other styles include ring probes, which detect flaws in the surface or subsurface layer around fastener heads, bolts, or rivets. They allow complete eddy current inspection without removing the fastener, bolt, or rivet. The bolt-hole probes identify defects on the inside walls of s-diameter holes such as fastener and bolt holes. These probes are used for manual rotation or with the company's rotating probe guns.

Weld-scan probes employ coil winding configurations that make them insensitive to permeability and liftoff variations. What this does is allow the use of eddy current to inspect ferrous and nonferrous materials for surface or near-surface flaws. The detachable tip (DT) probes, with interchangeable probe tips and handles, make probe changes simple and fast. They come in pencil, spot, ring, weld scan, shielded and unshielded, differential, absolute, and driver pickup configurations.
