International Metrology Systems, Inc.CMM is built for operation on the factory floor. With fewer than 60 individual components, the machine features a single-piece enclosure to eliminate exposed moving parts or problem-causing bellows. This family of CMMs is made up of three models with the following XYZ measuring envelopes: Umpire, 14- × 14- × 12- in. (350 × 350 × 300 mm); Umpire S, 20- × 14- × 12-in. (500 × 350 × 300 mm); and Umpire II, 20- × 20- × 12-in. (500 × 500x × 00 mm).

The accuracy of these machines is built-in. The optional granite baseplate has only a supporting role, thereby allowing the CMM to be added to existing fixture plates or fully integrated within a manufacturing line. Each axis utilizes hardened linear guides with optimum bearing spreads. A centrally located ballscrew drive shaft is directly coupled to the servomotor, providing the best mechanically driven accuracy. In addition, an adjustable fixed pitch Z column (patent pending) ensures that regardless of probe, fixture design or application, the total Z measuring travel remains available and can be positioned exactly to suite specific needs.

These CMMs are linked with IMS Virtual DMIS measuring software so that the CMM can be an integral part of the manufacturing process, permitting the generation of inspection programs before manufacturing is performed. When linked to real-time SPC, this provides the data needed to control the production process. The CMMs are portable with plug and measure capabilities, and can be supplied as ready-to-measure production CMMs with fixtures and inspection programs.
