CyberOptics Sells Assets of Industrial Measurement Line to Optical Gaging Products

Deciding to pull out of the general metrology system market and focus on SMT electronics and semiconductor equipment, CyberOptics Corp. (Minneapolis, MN) has agreed to sell the assets and license the software of its CyberScan Cobra portable laser inspection system to non-contact optical measurement device manufacturer Optical Gaging Products, Inc. (OGP; Rochester, NY). The Cobra system provides 2D or 3D high-resolution surface profiling.

In addition, CyberOptics will become the exclusive supplier of all laser triangulation sensors for application in Cobra and OGP's line of general-purpose metrology measurement products. Terms of the agreements were not reported.

Starting next year, CyberOptics will merge its laser triangulation sensor operations into its SMT/OEM sensor business unit; it also will continue offering the CyberScan Vantage high-end industrial measurement product to its electronic industry customers. According to the company, revenue from general industrial measurement products accounted for less than 5% of the consolidated sales through the first nine months of 1999.

"The decision to substantially exit the end-user general metrology market is consistent with CyberOptics' strategic emphasis on its best, long-term opportunities in the SMT electronic assembly and semiconductor equipment markets," said Steven K. Case, chairman of CyberOptics. "We … are very pleased to have this opportunity to partner with a global leader in the industrial measurement marketplace. We are looking forward to the incorporation of CyberOptics' laser sensor technology into many future new developments with OGP."

OGP is a leading designer and manufacturer of non-contact optical measuring systems that are used in a wide range of industries to improve manufacturing quality.
