The device provides free access to the equatorial area in four sectors and permits scanning in hemispherical halves around the poles. The drilled "voids" enable the measurement probe to be aligned at an angle to the plate (within limits) without a collision. When used in a vertical orientation, contact is possible from both sides of the sphere plate.

Twenty-five spheres of 22 mm diameter are inset at a certain distance into a corrosion-treated gage steel plate body. Extraneous material is drilled out to cut down on the unit's weight. A temperature-controlled process allows the spheres to be press-fit without deformation, and insulating handles and plastic protection help counter the thermal effects.

An optional probe test unit, with a high-tolerance ceramic sphere and a ring gage, is also available.
