This vertical stand is designed to improve the ball bar evaluation of CMMs according to ANSI B89.4.1-1997. The device's rigid support puts an end to deflection problems typically associated with freestanding ball bars.

A heavy interference fit fixes the 2-in. diameter vertical column into a 25-lb solid cast iron base. The bottom of the base has three hard stainless steel feet that are lapped flat and coplanar to provide a microinch stable location surface. The ball bar is cradled and rigidly clamped in a long Vee block machined into a hard anodized aluminum bracket. The bracket is fully adjustable up, down, and around the column.

The stand also has a hold-down device that clamps it solidly against the CMM table.
