History

This fascinating and functional instrument demonstrates the link between science and art. Measuring heat had been a puzzle in the circle of practical and learned men of the 16th century Venice. Among these men was the brilliant astronomer Galileo Galilei, who discovered that as a liquid's temperature increases its buoyancy decreases. His findings inspired this unusual and interesting thermometer with colorful spheres that rise and fall to indicate temperature.

Theory

In a liquid, a solid body, in this case glass spheres with the same weight and size will sink as the temperature rises; the same body will rise as the temperature falls.
