Tescina’s new gage interface speeds data collection on handheld devices

Tescina, Inc. (Fremont, CA) has introduced the DataGet BCD cartridge, the first gage interface for the HandSpring Visor expandable handheld data collection device and the first gage multiplexer for any Palm operating system device.

The benefits of using this cartridge compared to the existing DataGet ports are faster data collection times and better ergonomics. For example, if you measure 100 parts per day without having to switch cables while taking measurements can save more than a day a month, according to the company.

The cables are connected to the top of the Visor unit, which keeps them out of the way; it also gives the user the option of mounting the Visor in a cradle while collecting data.

In order to use the power of the SpringBoard slot, the company used Actel's new eX64 chip. That chip series is said to provide the industry's lowest power, high performance, low-cost CPLD solution. Designing with the eX64 chip gave the gage interface the precise features, lowest power, and smallest package to meet customers needs without compromising cost or performance.

The DataGet BCD cartridge uses the SpringBoard architecture to bring gage connectivity to the platform. "We are excited about bringing two more firsts to the manufacturing industry," said Oliver King-Smith, president of Tescina. "It keeps with our philosophy of making DataGet the most versatile handheld data collection system at any price."

List price for the BCD cartridge is $499. A complete system including a HandSpring Visor lists for $699. Volume shipments are available this quarter.

Founded in 1997, Tescina, Inc. develops handheld data collection systems for manufacturers.
